The Boll Weevil Monument
The worlds first monument to an agricultural pest resides in the town of Enterprise, Alabama. In 1919, the citizens of Enterprise commemorated the boll weevil and its profound impact on their local economy with a plaque and statue of a woman holding above her head, a boll weevil. Cotton was king in Alabama until the Mexican cotton boll wheevil appeared in the state in 1915. By 1918 farmers were losing entire crops of cotton. Resourceful farmers around Enterprise began to diversify their crops and grow peanuts along with cotton. The monument credits the boll wheevil as being a catalyst for change and reminds us of how the people of Enterprise adapted in the face of adversity.
