The Pecan, Alabama's State Nut

The pecan is Alabama's official state nut. The pecan is a large, deciduous tree in the hickory family and is native to Northern America. Pecans were domesticated and cultivated around 1880 by farmers and settlers, a rather late arrival to the market. The pecan tree likes to grow where summers are long, hot and humid. The nut harvest for the growers is typically around mid-October.
