The 1964 Good Friday Earthquake
On March 27, 1964 the Good Friday Earthquake rocked the state of Alaska with a temblor recorded at 9.2 on the richtor scale. The quake lasted 4 minutes and 38 seconds and was over one thousand times more powerful than the 1989 San Francisco Earthquake. The quake ruptured 600 miles of faultline at once and locations more than 200 miles away from the epicenter rose as much as 30 feet while other places sank up to 8 feet. The quake caused tsunamis in over 20 countries and evidence of motion directly related to the quake was reported as far away as Florida and Texas.
