Wild Ginseng of the Ozarks

Wild Ginseng of the Ozarks

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is found primarily in the deciduous forests of the Ozark region in northern Arkansas and throughout the Appalachian Mountains. The plant's root and leaves were used in traditional medicine by Native Americans. Starting in the 18th century, the plant started to be collected by "sang hunters" and sold to Chinese or Hong Kong traders, who often paid high prices for particularly old wild roots. Unfortunately, this has led to the overharvesting of the wild plant and it has been listed as an endangered species in some states.
