An American Mastodon Graveyard

American Mastodon remains have been found at over 20 sites across Arkansas and it is believed that the state contains more remains than any other in the mid-South. The American Mastadon was similar in size to its cousin, the modern day elephant, weighing between 4 to 7 tons. The animal roamed the forests and swamps of Arkansas over 12,000 years ago. Discoveries of Mastodon remains often yield multiple female and juvenile skeletons indicating that the Mastadon was a herd animal.
