The Blast of 1888

In 1888, a tremendous train wreck known as "The Blast", occurred in Fountain, Colorado. A freight train carrying eighteen tons of explosives and a passenger train collided in the city causing an explosion which destroyed buildings and killed several citizens. The cause of the wreck can be traced to two murderous vagrants. After an investigation by the Rocky Mountain News, it was reported that a man was murdered on the freight train after getting into a heated argument with the two vagrants. In order to cover up their malicious deeds, the men uncoupled the last three freight cars, one of which contained the corpse of the murdered man along with thousands of pounds of explosives and the caboose. These cars barreled down the tracks and into a passenger train causing the mighty explosion. The vagrants suspected at the root of the murder and the train wreck were never found and no one was ever charged with a crime.
