Miami's Ellis Island of the South

Miami's Ellis Island of the South

In the 1960s, refugees from Cuba fleeing Fidel Castro's communist regime arrived in Miami at the Freedom Tower. This former newspaper headquarters was chosen as the facility where the federal government processed, documented and provided medical and dental services for the newcomers. As a result, the Freedom Tower was called the "Ellis Island of the South" and remains a symbol of freedom for Cuban Americans.
