Hawaii's Vanished Pineapple Industry

While pineapples are practically synonymous with Hawaii, the fruit is not native to the islands and originated in South America. James Dole, a Boston transplant, started the Hawaiian Pineapple Company in 1901 and turned it into a global industry. By the 1950s Hawaii was producing 80% of the world's canned pineapple. Today virtually zero commercial pineapple is grown in Hawaii. The industry shifted to the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Thailand where labor costs were a fraction of what they were on the islands. The pineapple on your pizza has almost certainly never been to Hawaii.
