The Nene, Hawaii's Walking Goose
The Nene, Hawaii's state bird, was driven to the edge of extinction in the 20th century with just 30 individuals remaining in 1952. Through a dedicated captive breeding program the population has rebounded to over 2,500. The Nene are believed to have descended from Canada Geese blown off course thousands of years ago. Marooned on the volcanic islands with no need to swim, they slowly evolved feet that are less webbed than their mainland cousins, making them far better walkers than swimmers. A small but telling example of how quickly life adapts in isolation.
