The State That Is Still Growing
Kilauea volcano on the Big Island has been erupting more or less continuously since 1983, making it one of the most active volcanoes on earth. As lava flows into the Pacific Ocean it cools instantly and hardens, adding new land to the island. Hawaii is the only U.S. state that is literally still growing. Since 1983, Kilauea has added over 500 acres of new land to the Big Island, land that simply didn't exist forty years ago.
