Where NASA Trained Apollo Astronauts
The Craters of the Moon National Monument in central Idaho covers 618,000 acres of lava fields so surreal that NASA selected the site to train Apollo astronauts in 1969, just months before the moon landing. The volcanic activity that created the landscape occurred as recently as 2,000 years ago, making it one of the youngest volcanic regions in the continental United States. Standing at Craters of the Moon, it's easy to understand why the astronauts found it useful. In every direction the horizon looks borrowed from another world.
