The First State to Ratify the 13th Amendment
Illinois was the first state to ratify the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery, doing so on February 1, 1865, just two days after Congress passed it. The speed of the ratification was no accident. Illinois was Abraham Lincoln's adopted home state, and the legislature moved with deliberate urgency to make Illinois the first to make the amendment official. It took the rest of the country nearly a year to reach the required three-quarters threshold.
