The Inventor of Stainless Steel
Elwood Haynes of Kokomo, Indiana built one of the first successful American gasoline-powered automobiles in 1894 and test drove it on Pumpkinvine Pike outside of Kokomo on July 4th of that year. The car reached a top speed of about seven miles per hour. Haynes later co-founded the Haynes Automobile Company and was also the inventor of stainless steel and two cobalt-based alloys that are still used in jet engines and surgical instruments today.
