A State Bordered by Two Rivers
Iowa is the only state in the nation whose east and west borders are almost entirely defined by rivers. The Missouri River forms the western border and the Mississippi River forms the eastern border, making Iowa one of the most naturally bounded states in the country. This geography contributed to Iowa becoming one of the most fertile agricultural regions in the world, as centuries of river flooding deposited deep layers of nutrient-rich topsoil across the entire state.
