The Geographic Center of the Lower 48
The geographic center of the contiguous 48 states is marked by a small monument in a field near Lebanon, Kansas, a town of fewer than 200 people. It was calculated in 1918 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey by balancing a cardboard cutout of the lower 48 states on a pin until it reached equilibrium. The actual center point is on private farmland, so the official marker was placed about a mile away on a side road, where a small motel and flagpole now mark the spot.
