Dodge City, Capital of the Cattle Trail
Dodge City, Kansas became the most famous cattle town in the American West after the Santa Fe Railroad arrived in 1872. At the height of the cattle drives, Dodge City was processing up to 500,000 longhorn cattle per year driven up the Chisholm and Western Trails from Texas. The city's Boot Hill cemetery, where cowboys who died with their boots on were buried, and its Long Branch Saloon became iconic symbols of the frontier. Wyatt Earp served as assistant marshal there in 1876, and Bat Masterson served as county sheriff.
