The Run for the Roses
The Kentucky Derby, first run in 1875 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, is the oldest continuously held major sporting event in the United States. The race itself lasts only about two minutes, but preparation for it consumes an entire year and generates over $400 million for the Louisville economy. The traditional garland of roses draped over the winning horse has given the race its nickname, Run for the Roses. The recipe for the official cocktail, the Mint Julep, has been served at Churchill Downs since 1875 and has changed very little in 150 years.
