The Gold Inside Fort Knox

Fort Knox in Kentucky has housed the bulk of the United States gold reserves since 1937, currently holding about 147 million troy ounces of gold bullion, roughly half of all the gold owned by the U.S. government. The vault is protected by a 22-ton door and surrounded by layers of security that include armed guards, electric fences, and minefields. No complete audit of the gold has been performed since 1953, a fact that fuels periodic conspiracy theories about whether the gold is actually still there.
