The Birthplace of Jazz
Jazz music was born in New Orleans, Louisiana at the turn of the 20th century, emerging from a collision of African rhythms, blues, gospel, ragtime, and European brass band music. The city's Congo Square, where enslaved Africans were permitted to gather and play music on Sundays, is widely considered the birthplace of American music as a whole. Cornet player Buddy Bolden is often credited as the first musician to play what would be recognized as jazz, around 1895. New Orleans remains the only American city with a serious claim to having invented a globally dominant musical form.
