Bordered by One State and the Sea
Maine is the only state in the continental United States that shares a border with just one other state, New Hampshire to the west and south. Every other direction is either the Atlantic Ocean or Canada. This geographic isolation helped shape a fiercely independent culture that persists today. Maine has more coastline than California, over 3,500 miles when all the bays, inlets, and islands are counted, yet fewer people live in the entire state than in the city of Austin, Texas.
