99% of America's Wild Blueberries

Maine produces roughly 99% of all wild blueberries grown in the United States. Wild blueberries are not planted but managed, growing naturally from ancient root systems that can be thousands of years old. Farmers manage the barrens by burning or mowing every other year, which encourages new growth. The berries are smaller and more intensely flavored than cultivated blueberries and are harvested using hand rakes that comb the low-growing plants clean in one pass. In a good year Maine produces over 100 million pounds of wild blueberries.
