The U.S. Naval Academy

The U.S. Naval Academy has been located in Annapolis, Maryland since its founding in 1845. It was established on the grounds of Fort Severn, a ten-acre army post at the confluence of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay. The academy sits on 338 acres and graduates roughly 1,000 officers per year. Its campus chapel contains the crypt of John Paul Jones, the Revolutionary War naval hero who famously declared, 'I have not yet begun to fight,' during a battle in which his own ship had caught fire and was sinking.
