More Freshwater Coast Than Anywhere
Michigan has more freshwater coastline than any state except Alaska, with 3,288 miles of shoreline along four of the five Great Lakes. The Great Lakes themselves hold about 21% of the world's surface freshwater, and Michigan touches more of that water than any other state. The state is also split into two separate landmasses, the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, connected only by the Mackinac Bridge. When it opened in 1957, the Mackinac Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Residents of the Upper Peninsula, called Yoopers, maintain a distinct culture and dialect from the rest of the state.
