How Cornflakes Were Invented

In 1894, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his brother Will Keith Kellogg accidentally invented cornflakes at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, a health resort in Battle Creek, Michigan where Kellogg promoted a strict vegetarian diet. After leaving a batch of wheat dough out overnight, they ran it through rollers anyway and found it produced thin, crispy flakes. Will eventually added sugar, which John opposed on health grounds, and the two brothers had a falling out. Will founded the Kellogg Company in 1906 and Battle Creek became the cereal capital of the world.
