The Birth of Motown

Motown Records was founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1959 by Berry Gordy Jr. with an $800 loan from his family. Within a decade, Motown had become the most successful Black-owned business in the United States and had produced a string of artists including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and The Jackson 5. Gordy deliberately crafted a sound designed to appeal to both Black and white audiences at a time when racial segregation was still legal in much of the country.
