More Lakes Than Anywhere Else
Minnesota has 11,842 lakes that are 10 acres or larger, more than California, Florida, and Hawaii combined. The state's license plates have carried the phrase Land of 10,000 Lakes since 1950, though the actual number has always been higher. The lakes are largely a product of the last ice age, carved by glaciers that retreated about 10,000 years ago and left behind a landscape of basins that filled with water. About one in six Minnesotans owns a watercraft of some kind.
