Where Scotch Tape and Post-its Were Born
Both Scotch tape and Post-it Notes were invented at 3M, the manufacturing company headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota. Scotch tape was developed in 1930 by 3M engineer Richard Drew, who had earlier invented masking tape while watching auto painters struggle with messy adhesive edges. Post-it Notes came from a 1968 experiment in which chemist Spencer Silver accidentally created a low-tack adhesive that could be removed without leaving a residue. The adhesive sat unused for years until colleague Art Fry realized it would be perfect for keeping bookmarks in his hymnal without damaging the pages.
