The Birthplace of the Blues
The Mississippi Delta region, roughly defined as the flat alluvial plain between the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers, is the birthplace of the blues. Beginning in the late 1800s, African American sharecroppers working the Delta's cotton fields developed a new form of music rooted in African musical traditions, field hollers, and spirituals. Artists like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Howlin' Wolf came from the Delta and carried the blues north to Chicago, where it evolved into electric blues and eventually rock and roll. The Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale preserves the history of this transformative musical tradition.
