The Birthplace of Elvis
Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in a two-room house built by his father Vernon in Tupelo, Mississippi. The house cost $180 to build and still stands today as a museum. Elvis's twin brother Jesse Garon was stillborn the same day. The family was extremely poor, and Elvis grew up attending a Pentecostal church where the emotional, full-bodied singing style he would later make famous was a regular part of worship. Vernon Presley was arrested and jailed for check forgery when Elvis was three, a period of hardship that shaped the family's willingness to leave Mississippi for Memphis when Elvis was 13.
