The Birthplace of Jim Henson
Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, was born in Greenville, Mississippi in 1936 and grew up watching the early days of television in Maryland. He created his first puppet, Kermit, from his mother's old green coat and two halves of a ping pong ball. Henson began working in television in 1955 at the age of 18. Sesame Street, which Henson helped develop and produce, premiered in 1969 and is estimated to have taught more children to read than any single educational program in history.
