Kansas City, the City of Fountains
Kansas City, Missouri is home to more fountains than any city in the world except Rome. The city has over 200 fountains, a legacy of a civic beautification movement that began in the early 20th century when a local merchant left money for the construction of watering troughs for horses. The effort grew into an obsession with public fountains that continued through multiple generations of city planners. Kansas City residents are proud of the distinction, even though most people they mention it to find it surprising.
