Harry Truman's Missouri
Harry S. Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri in 1884 and remained a Missourian his entire life, retiring to Independence after his presidency. Truman is the only president of the 20th century who never attended college, and he took over the presidency in April 1945 without ever having been briefed by Franklin Roosevelt on the existence of the atomic bomb. Within four months of taking office he had authorized its use on Japan, ending World War II. His presidential library and burial site are in Independence, Missouri.
