Grizzly Bear Country
Montana has the largest population of grizzly bears in the lower 48 states, with roughly 1,000 to 1,500 bears living primarily in and around Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The grizzly was once found across most of the western United States but was hunted and displaced until only isolated populations remained. Montana's combination of vast roadless wilderness and low human population density makes it one of the few places in the contiguous U.S. where grizzlies can range freely over large territories.
