Custer's Last Stand at Little Bighorn

The Battle of Little Bighorn took place in eastern Montana on June 25 and 26, 1876, when Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer led 700 soldiers of the 7th Cavalry into a camp of Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors estimated at between 1,500 and 2,500 fighters. Custer divided his forces and attacked without full knowledge of what he was facing. His immediate command of 268 soldiers was annihilated within an hour. It was the most significant military victory for the Plains Indians in their resistance to U.S. expansion, though within a year most of the warrior bands had been forced onto reservations.
