More Cattle Than People
Montana has more cattle and calves than people by a ratio of roughly two to one. The state's nearly 2.5 million cattle outnumber its approximately 1.1 million residents, and ranches in Montana can be extraordinarily large. The American Prairie Reserve, a conservation project working to restore native grassland in north-central Montana, is assembling a single contiguous wildlife reserve that will eventually cover 3 million acres. The goal is to restore a functioning shortgrass prairie ecosystem, including wild bison, that has not existed in Montana since the 1880s.
