America's Only Unicameral Legislature
Nebraska is the only state in the United States with a unicameral legislature, meaning its state government operates with a single legislative chamber rather than the two-chamber system every other state uses. The unicameral system was adopted in 1934 after a campaign led by U.S. Senator George Norris, who argued that the standard bicameral model was redundant, expensive, and prone to gridlock. Nebraska's 49-senator legislature is also officially nonpartisan, meaning senators run without party labels, another feature unique among American states.
