America's Most Mountainous State
Nevada is the most mountainous state in the contiguous United States, with over 300 named mountain ranges. The popular image of Nevada as a flat desert is largely wrong outside of the Las Vegas valley. The state's terrain is dominated by the Basin and Range Province, a region of parallel mountain ranges separated by broad desert valleys stretching from the Oregon border to Mexico. Despite this rugged topography, Nevada is also the driest state in the nation, with an average annual rainfall of less than 10 inches statewide.
