America's First Boardwalk
The first boardwalk in the United States was built in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1870. The idea came from hotel owners who were tired of sand being tracked into their lobbies by beachgoers. The original boardwalk was a simple wooden walkway that was assembled in the morning and taken apart in the evening. It was rebuilt as a permanent structure in 1880. The success of Atlantic City's boardwalk inspired boardwalks in dozens of other American beach resort towns, and the word boardwalk entered American culture as a general term for any seaside promenade.
