FactMap·New Mexico

The State With the Most PhDs

New Mexico has more PhDs per capita than any other state in the United States, a distinction driven largely by the concentration of national laboratories and research institutions in the state. Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque and Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, both originally established as part of the Manhattan Project, together employ thousands of scientists and researchers and drive some of the most advanced research in energy, defense, and computing in the world.
