The Wright Brothers' First Flight
On December 17, 1903, on a cold and windy beach at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville and Wilbur Wright made four successful powered airplane flights, the longest lasting 59 seconds and covering 852 feet. The brothers had chosen Kitty Hawk for its steady winds and soft sand landings, communicating by mail with the local weather station before relocating there from Ohio. They sent a telegram to their father that afternoon: Success four flights Thursday morning. He was asked to inform the press. The newspaper back home ran the story on page five.
