The Biltmore Estate

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina is the largest privately owned home in the United States, with 178,926 square feet of floor space, 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces. It was built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895, inspired by the chateaux of the Loire Valley in France, and designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, who also designed the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. Vanderbilt hired landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to design the 8,000-acre grounds. Olmsted used the project to develop principles of scientific forest management that later influenced the creation of the U.S. Forest Service.
