America's Most Visited National Park
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, straddling the North Carolina-Tennessee border, is the most visited national park in the United States, regularly drawing over 12 million visitors per year, more than twice the visitation of the Grand Canyon. Unlike most national parks, it charges no admission fee. The Smokies are named for a naturally occurring blue-gray haze that hangs over the mountains, produced by organic compounds released by the dense vegetation. The range contains one of the most biodiverse temperate forests in the world, with over 19,000 documented species.
