FactMap·North Dakota

America's Sunflower Capital

North Dakota leads the nation in the production of sunflowers, canola, flaxseed, dry edible peas, and several other specialty crops. The state's flat topography, which was carved by glaciers into some of the most level land on earth, makes it ideal for large-scale mechanized agriculture. North Dakota farmers operate some of the largest individual farms in the country, with single operations covering tens of thousands of acres. The state's agricultural output per capita is among the highest of any state, fueling an economy that is almost entirely dependent on what can be grown or extracted from its soil.
