The State of Astronauts

Ohio has produced more astronauts than any other state in the United States. Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio. John Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth, was from New Concord. Jim Lovell, commander of Apollo 13, was from Cleveland. In total, more than 25 people born in Ohio have gone to space, a concentration that has never been fully explained but that Ohioans attribute partly to the state's long tradition in aviation, which began with the Wright Brothers from Dayton.
