America's First Pro Baseball Team
The Cincinnati Red Stockings, founded in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1869, were the first fully professional baseball team in the United States, the first to openly pay all of their players rather than claiming they were amateurs. That first season they went undefeated, winning 65 games and tying one, playing their home games at a ballpark on the banks of the Ohio River. The team still plays today as the Cincinnati Reds, making it the oldest continuously operating professional baseball franchise in the country.
