The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is located in Cleveland, Ohio, a choice that reflects Cleveland's historical importance to the early spread of rock music. Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed is widely credited with coining the term rock and roll in the early 1950s and was among the first radio programmers to play Black rhythm and blues music for white audiences on mainstream radio. The hall opened in 1995 in a building designed by I.M. Pei on the shore of Lake Erie, and the city has hosted the annual induction ceremony several times since.
