Oil Wells on the Capitol Grounds
Oklahoma is the only state in the United States where the grounds of the state capitol building contain active oil wells. The capitol sits atop the Oklahoma City Oil Field, which was discovered in 1928, and the first well on the capitol grounds began producing in 1941. At peak production, the well, nicknamed Petunia Number One because it was drilled in a flower bed, produced 1,500 barrels of oil per day. The wells are now largely depleted, but their presence on the capitol lawn remains a singular symbol of Oklahoma's oil heritage.
