The Route 66 State

Route 66, the historic highway running from Chicago to Los Angeles, passes through more miles of Oklahoma than any other state. The 400 miles of Route 66 through Oklahoma represent the largest intact and driveable stretch of the original road remaining in the country. When the highway was established in 1926, it provided the main migration route for the Dust Bowl refugees of the 1930s, the Okies described by John Steinbeck in The Grapes of Wrath, who drove their overloaded trucks west along Route 66 in search of a better life in California.
