More Ghost Towns Than Any State

Oregon has more ghost towns than any other state in the country, with over 200 documented abandoned settlements scattered across the state's interior. Most were mining towns that sprang up during silver and gold rushes in the second half of the 1800s and collapsed just as quickly when the ore ran out. Others were farming communities that failed when the railroad bypassed them or when drought killed the crops. Some of the ghost towns retain standing buildings, churches, and even entire main streets, preserved by the dry eastern Oregon climate into eerie tableaux of a vanished America.
