The World's Largest Amish Community
Pennsylvania is home to the largest Amish community in the world. Lancaster County and surrounding areas have been settled by Amish families since the early 1700s, and the community has grown to over 40,000 people who largely reject modern technology, drive horse-drawn buggies, and farm using traditional methods. The Amish population doubles roughly every 20 years because of large family sizes and a retention rate of about 85% among young people who come of age and choose whether to formally join the church. The community's presence has made Lancaster County one of the top tourist destinations in the state.
